Arsenal are still hopeful of signing Mesut Ozil to a new deal before the end of this season, although talks have slowed down.
When asked about the player’s future, Arsene Wenger told reporters optimistically that he expects the German to sign a new deal with the Gunners, but he admitted that contract talks have slowed down since the end of the transfer window.
Ozil is one of a few players like Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere who have just a year left on their current Arsenal deal.
The German has been in talks with the club over a new deal since last winter but he has decided to stop talks as he studies how the club progresses this season. The Gunners have reportedly offered him a deal worth £250,000 per week which he has refused to sign.
While Alexis Sanchez had a lot of suitors last season, it was a different case for Mesut Ozil as Turkish side Fenerbahce were the only team to show serious interest in the midfielder. However, there were reports that Barcelona was also interested in signing him but they were shocked to be quoted £50 million by the Gunners.
With his contract expiring next summer, several other teams would be expected to show interest in his service by January.
