Paul Merson insists Arsene Wenger is the right manager for Arsenal, despite their differences.
The French boss has once again been linked with a move away at the end of the season, with reports in the media claiming that the officials are stepping up interest in Pep Guardiola.
And despite the pair trading insults in the media during the past few weeks, Merson claims Wenger is still the right man for the job.
Merson told the Telegraph: “I was with a lot of Arsenal fans the other day and I was quite shocked at how many are against Arsène now,” Merson says. “That FA Cup win is now a distant memory. And I think these next two games are massive, massive football matches. Only one set of people get you the sack and that’s the fans. The club are never going to sack Arsène. He makes too much money for them. But if the fans start to properly turn, that changes things.
“But what I would always say is be careful what you wish for. I saw it at a different level with Alan Curbishley at Charlton. The fans got a bit bored with always finishing mid-table in the Premier League and they thought they could do better. Well look at them now. They’re nowhere.
“I’m not saying Arsenal would get relegated without Wenger but look at Man United. One bad season and they’re out of the top four. Arsenal have had eight or nine seasons when they’ve not been great but they’ve still finished in the top four. That is some feat. But as you go on you want more than that. You want to improve.”
