Arsenal is pursuing a deal for a central midfielder as the future of Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere remain unclear.
According to reports in Portugal, the Gunners have launched a bid for their long term target William Carvalho, and the player also seems to have prioritised moving to the Emirate.
Newcastle and West Brom are also keen on signing Carvalho, but the player wants to move to a top six club at least. The Gunners had a £20 million bid for the midfielder turned down in the summer of 2014, as Sporting wanted his release clause of around £40 million to be met at that time. However, the club has softened their stance and would now sell him for around £27 million.
Arsenal are overhauling their squad and they have informed Wilshere that he can leave, while they remain far apart from agreeing on a deal for Oxlade Chamberlain after the midfielder rejected a new contract worth £100,000 per week, and Aaron Ramsey is also in the final year of his Gunners deal.
Carvalho is good at playing in central midfield as well as further forward, and Wenger believes his experience playing for Sporting in Europe could see him lead them to Europa League glory this season.
