Arsenal remains in the race to sign young Argentinian sensation Lautaro Martinez, despite a reported bid of £11.25m from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
The bid from Atletico has in fact been turned down by Racing Club and the ball is now in Arsenal’s court.
It had appeared that Arsenal was set to miss out on the youngster and that he was on his way to Madrid but they now have a chance to table their own offer and land a player they have been monitoring for some time.
As well as Arsenal and Atletico, Martinez has also come to the attention of Monaco and Real Madrid so any hesitation on the part of Wenger could see him miss out on a player tipped to be world class.
It is also very unlikely that any sale will be concluded in the January transfer window, not according to Racing President Victo Blanco.
Speaking to Fox Sports Radio Sur, Blanco said: “We received an offer from Atletico of €12.75m, plus a 10 percent surplus value of a future sale, for Lautaro Martinez but Racing turned it down.
“We want to get together on Monday or Tuesday with Lautaro’s agent to discuss this and make a definite decision.
“I spoke with him and I can guarantee that Lautaro is going to continue with us until June.”
That does not mean a transfer cannot be agreed in January with the player remaining in Argentina until the summer.
