After being given a tough list of early opponents, Atalanta has started their season very poorly losing their first two games to Napoli and AS Roma who are arguably stronger than them. However, they bounced back in their last match with a win and that would have done their morale the world of good as they host the Toffees in their first European game since the early 90s. One thing that Everton could exploit against Atalanta in this game is their preference for offensive play which leaves them exposed at the back at times, but the Italians are always looking to outscore their opponent and they did that very often last season.
Everton head into this game in poor form and they desperately need to get back to winning ways. The Toffees started the season very well and did not concede any goal in their first couple of matches although their attack also failed to score more than a single goal in most of those games. Their defence was breached by Chelsea in their third league game and they lost the following game to Tottenham which makes it two losses on the bounce for Ronald Koeman’s side. After spending as much as they did during the summer, their fans will expect them to get back to form in this game, but their attackers seem to be struggling and if their defence fails them here again, that could spell further disaster for them.
We believe Everton will struggle in this game in a hostile Italian atmosphere.
