After snapping at reporters who questioned his club’s transfer business last weekend, Antonio Conte is set to begin another major recruitment drive that would see him land at least two defenders.
Conte has allowed more than 20 Chelsea players to leave the club this summer and that has left him with a very thin squad ahead of the new season. This was made more obvious on Sunday when he had to use Charly Musonda, and Jeremy Boga as second half substitutes as the Blues lost the Community Shield to Arsenal, a second loss to the Gunners in as many competitive matches.
The Blues board have decided to back him up with the signing of Serge Aurier from PSG and Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
They face competition from Manchester United for the 24 years Aurier who has been displaced by Dani Alves at PSG, while Liverpool remains the preferred destination from Southampton’s Van Dijk. They also have an interest in Antonio Cadreva and Renato Sanches.
Conte is currently very frustrated as he cannot use Tiemoue Bakayoko who is injured until September, and Alvaro Morata is taking too much time to adapt to his style and the energy levels of the Premier League.
