Chelsea is trying to hijack a move for AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas. The Greek defender has been on the Blues radar for some time now, but they failed to follow up their interest with any bid.
Roma has however accepted an offer from Zenit Saint Petersburg worth around £26 million for the defender who played more than 40 games last season.
Chelsea are hoping that the lure of playing in the Premier League would be enough to tempt Manolas to join them.
However, an Italian source is claiming that Zenit is offering the player a more lucrative personal term, while Chelsea is offering a higher transfer fee. AS Roma would accept Chelsea’s transfer fee, but it would be difficult for the player to move to Chelsea for a lesser wage than what Zenit are offering him.
The Blues first choice remains Virgil Van Dijk, but with Southampton demanding £70 million for the Dutchman, they have now turned their attention to other targets, Kostas Manolas may find it hard to replace any of David Luiz or Gary Cahill in the starting lineup, but Antonio Conte wants him to come in for involvement in other competitions.
