Rumours in the press have suggested that Chelsea are interested in signing a new striker this summer, with the Blues particularly keen on re-signing Romelu Lukaku. However, efforts to tempt their main target back to Stamford Bridge have now apparently failed, and the club are desperately looking at alternative options before the window closes, with reports suggesting that Mario Mandzukic is high on the list.
The Croatian international joined Juventus last season, scoring 10 Serie A goals as the Turin team won their fifth consecutive domestic title. However, Juventus recently signed Gonzalo Higuain in a club record deal, leading to speculation that Mandzukic’s time at the club could already be over. A solid showing during the European Championships has several teams linked to the player, including from the Premier League.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has been associated with several raids on his former team, and knows that Mandzukic would be a relatively cheap option when compared to the fees surrounding Lukaku. Although Juventus bought the striker from Atletico Madrid for £16 million just a year ago, Mandzukic’s valuation has seemingly increased, with the Mirror stating that an offer of around £25 million would be needed to convince the Italians to sell.
