Antonio Conte is facing a primary challenge in his pursuit of some of his summer targets.
The Italian has prioritised strengthening his defence this summer ahead of next season. But with a few days to go before they jet out for preseason, he is yet to land any of his targets.
The Blues appeared close to completing a deal for Juventus hard man Leonardo Bonucci, but that deal is now being threatened by a fresh interest in the player by Barcelona. The defender signed a new deal with Juventus last December, which puts the Italians in a good position to negotiate his transfer. They have asked for £60 million, but Chelsea is unwilling to pay that sum for a 30-year-old. This unwillingness has seen Barcelona join the chase.
Conte is also hoping to sign Alex Sandro from Juventus, but so far there has not been a compromise among the two clubs, and Conte is frustrated. Juventus have also offered the Brazilian a new deal in an attempt to make him stay with them for at least one more season.
The Blues’ pursuit of Germany international Antonio Rudiger has also being thrown into doubt after Manchester City entered the race to sign him. Chelsea was believed to have agreed on both transfer fee and personal terms with the player, but he has decided to consider Manchester City’s proposal.
