Zenit boss Andre Villas-Boas has revealed he tried to sign Chelsea striker Radamel Falcao in the summer.
The Colombia striker was on the hunt for a new club after flopping at Manchester United last season.
And the former Blues boss revealed he was keen on bringing him to the club earlier in the year but the move was a non-starter due to red tape.
“I haven’t had a conversation with Jose, the player belongs to Chelsea, on loan from Monaco,” Villas-Boas said on the Daily Star website.
“It’s difficult to bring such a player to Russia with the rules and regulations we have.
“We tried to bring him here in the summer at the start of the season, but then the rules changed a week before the season started.”
