It is being reported today that Chelsea want to sign Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski regardless of who is in charge, and there is every reason to believe that this particular piece of transfer gossip is accurate.
Lewandowski has hired the services of super-agent Pini Zahavi, who has already spoken publicly about the Pole’s determination to leave Bayern for a new challenge:
“Robert believes he needs a change and a new challenge in his career, Bayern officials know it.”
It is thought that Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are also interested in signing the 29-year-old hitman, though their interest depends on whether they sell their own superstars Neymar and Ronaldo respectively.
Chelsea were clearly lacking up front last season. Alvaro Morata was a huge disappointment and Lewandowski would represent a massive upgrade. He is proven at the highest level and is as lethal as they come in front of goal.
His signing would also send a message to Eden Hazard that they mean business and that he would be better off remaining a Chelsea player.
A combination of Hazard and Lewandowski would be potent and would make Chelsea competitive once again. However, their lack of Champions League football may be too much of an obstacle for both players.
Lewandowski is not getting any younger and, at 29, may well not want to waste what little time he has left at the top playing in the Europa League when he could be playing in the Champions League. The same applies to Hazard. He knows how tough the competition is in the English Premier League and may well prefer to move to a team that is guaranteed Champions League football year after year.
That said, money talks and Chelsea have money. They could offer Lewandowski a huge salary and force Hazard to stay for at least another season in the hope that the partnership the two players could develop will drive them on to both domestic and European success.
