Chelsea plan to swoop for former Premier League winner

Chelsea is set to make a shock move for Leicester City’s midfielder Daniel Drinkwater after the sale of Nemanja Matic.

The Serbian joined Manchester United last night on a three years deal for £40 million, and his departure has left a considerable gap in the Blues midfield ahead of the new season, and Antonio Conte is keen on covering that gap.

The Italian manager has signed Tiemoue Bakayoko from AS Monaco this summer, which was a catalyst for Matic’s move, but he wants more cover for his midfielders as they may play up to 60 games this season.

Drinkwater won the League title with Leicester City two seasons back, and he signed a new long term contract at the King Power Stadium last summer, but he may find Chelsea’s approach hard to ignore.

However, Leicester City is expected to turn down Chelsea’s approach as they look to keep hold of their best players and challenge for the league title again this season.

This means the Blues would turn to the more attacking minded Ross Barkley who us up for sale at Everton.
