Confirmed: Chelsea did try to sign world class striker for record fee

Chelsea did try to sign Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata in the summer transfer window, a fact confirmed by the player himself.

If the deal would have gone ahead it would have made the Spaniard the most expensive Spanish footballer ever.

Madrid re-signed Morata from Italian giants Juventus in the summer due to a £24 Million buy back clause in his contract.

Chelsea had been linked with the 23 year old all summer, both before and after his move back to Madrid, however, it was always unlikely that he would be sold by Real, but that did not stop the Blues from trying as Morata confirmed

‘Chelsea showed the most interest,’ he told Sport Bild.

‘Antonio Conte had already signed me for Juventus.

‘And it was a very good offer this time. I would have been the most expensive Spanish player ever.’

Morata began his career at Real Madrid, he made his debut with the senior team in late 2010 and went on to appear in 52 games scoring 11 goals, he was a member of the 2014 Champions League winning sign and was then sold to Juventus.

At Juventus Morata won the domestic double of Serie A and Coppa Italia in both of his seasons before returning to Spain.
