Dietmar Hamann believes Everton midfielder James McCarthy would be an ideal replacement for Steven Gerrard at Liverpool.
The Reds captain will depart Anfield at the end of the season to join LA Galaxy after spending his entire career on Merseyside.
Brendan Rodgers is set to be in the market for his replacement in the summer and ex-Liverpool man Hamann believes he should look across Stanley Park.
“I’ve always been a big fan of McCarthy’s. I think he’s done ever so well this season,” he told the Irish Independent.
“Whether he’s a player Liverpool are interested in him remains but to be seen but in the centre midfield ares – Joe Allen, Henderson, there’s a few players there.
“Somebody has to step up and perform at the highest every single week because obviously that’s what will be missing with Steven Gerrard gone.”
