Juventus playmaker Andrea Pirlo has revealed how he turned down the chance to play for Chelsea, after a last-minute intervention from Silvio Berlusconi.
The former AC Milan midfielder admits he had already agreed a move to the Blues – presumably during Carlo Ancelotti’s reign between 2009-2011 – but was talked out of it by the Rossoneri president.
‘I had already reached an agreement with Chelsea, then after Berlusconi intervened and I stayed at Milan. I was also very close with Capello at Real Madrid and nearly joined them in 2006,’ he explained in his autobiography.’ (The Metro)
Pirlo is still a great player despite his age and he would have been a fantastic addition to the Premier League and Chelsea’s squad if he did make the move back when he had the chance too.
