Sunderland star Paddy McNair has revealed that Jose Mourinho did not want him to leave Old Trafford on a permanent basis.

The Northern Ireland International opted to leave Manchester United last summer after the sacking of Louis Van Gaal.

McNair has claimed that the Portuguese gaffer saw a future for him at Old Trafford and was reluctant to let him depart Old Trafford, instead preferring to send him out on-loan so he can gain valuable first team experience.

However, the player was more ambitious, and wanted to be at a club that would offer him first team football, so he joined David Moyes at Sunderland.

The Northern Irishman insisted that he told the Portuguese maestro that if he didn’t allow him go on a permanent basis, he would rather remain at United.

He claims that he has no regrets leaving United because he had decided it was time for a new challenge in his career.

He intimated that he also spoke to Ed Woodward at the time and related the same desire to leave on a permanent basis, and he is grateful that the club granted his wish.
