Torino accepted Manchester United’s £12m bid for Matteo Darmian because they need the cash to invest in their squad, according to club legend Claudio Sala.
Italy international full-back Darmian, 25, has agreed a four-year deal to join United and should sign on the dotted line in the coming days.
Sala told Tuttomercatoweb: “Torino needed to sell in order to invest and strengthen the team properly for the season and decided to sacrifice the full-back because he still wanted to go on.
“In the face of some major deals then you cannot say no.
“It can be a good deal for Torino, but on the condition that this money be reinvested adequately for players that can contribute to the cause.”
