Liverpool and Tottenham have reportedly joined the race to sign Middlesbrough central defender Ben Gibson. The 24 year old has been very impressive for Boro, a performance that got him invited to the England set up last month.
Despite their standing in the Premier League table, Middlesbrough have one of the tightest defences in the league. As a matter of fact, they had the fifth best defensive record in the league prior to tonights games.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino needs a new central defender. He has had to use Eric Dier many times in that position when there was an injury or suspension of any of his first choice central defenders. Even though Dier has been playing well when called upon to do the job, Pochettino knows it is not a long term solution and Dier is more effective when he plays his preferred central midfield role.
Liverpool have used Lucas many times in their central defence, a position that he has disappointed on several occasions. With the Brazilian set to end his long association with Liverpool, the club knows they will need another cover.
