Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is reportedly set to make a summer bid for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka as a possible replacement for the ageing Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard will be 34 soon and Rodgers is keen to bring in a midfield replacement as his captain approaches retirement.
Reds scouts have been working on a list of possible targets, and 21-year-old Xhaka tops the list, having proven himself as a star in German football.
The Switzerland international was a target for Liverpool whilst at Basle, and he’s been followed closely ever since.
A strong, aggressive and powerful central midfielder with an excellent passing range, he has been compared to Gerrard in the past, and Rodgers is keen to bring him to Merseyside.
However, the SportsDirectNews website claim the Premier League giants seemingly face stiff competition from Lazio, with reports that the Rome outfit will bid £7million for the Switzerland international.
