Man City coach Pep Guardiola has made signing Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci a priority this summer. Guardiola is back for the defender whom he tried so hard to sign during his first summer in the Premiership.

The Man City boss is looking for a rugged partner for John Stones, and even though Vincent Kompany made a return to the first team set up in their game against Chelsea, Guardiola does not believe Kompany is a long term partner for Stones. Age and injury have started to affect Kompany’s performances this season, and it is only a matter of time before the Belgian retires from the game entirely.

Man City signed Stones because of his ball-playing ability, but they have now realised that the England defender lacks the physicality to face strikers like Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa.

Nicolas Otamendi who is supposed to be a combative partner to Stones has been picked apart easily by rampaging strikers and Guardiola believes Bonucci would not fall so easily for their tricks.

Bonucci had a falling out with Juventus coach Alegri earlier in the season, and this may the best time for Man City to swoop for the defender.
