Napoli forward Dries Mertens could double his wages if he is willing to join Manchester United, according the latest reports coming out of the media.
The Belgian has been in talks with United previously, and has been offered more than £4 million annually to test his loyalty to the Naples team.
Mertens currently earns around £2.6 million and Napoli would likely not exceed that amount when they offer him a new contract. His contract expires in the next 15 months and United has offered him £4.3 million after tax to swap Napoli for Old Trafford next season.
Mertens is valued at £30 million, but Napoli would accept half or even less than half of that price if the player refuses to sign a new deal.
Although he is 29, Mertens is one of the most consistent players in the Serie A. He is versatile and able to play across the front three. Although his preferred position is from midfield, the player has shown that he can weigh in with the goals if given the task, having deputized for injured Polish striker, Arkadiusz Milik this season. He has impressively scored 20 goals in that position.
He fits the mould for the kind of player Jose Mourinho needs in his team right now.
