Manchester City has apparently won the first battle between themselves and two of their top four rivals ahead of the new season. The Citizens, who have been the busiest English team post-season, are set to complete the signing of Dutch defender and one of the most sought-after players in the Premier League this season, Virgil Van Dijk.
According to the reports, Manchester City was able to pull off the deal for the defender who appeared to be Liverpool-bound with a bid of £60 million and a personal offer of £200,000 per week for the defender. This offer turned out to be too good to be ignored by both the player and his club side.
Southampton signed Van Dijk from Celtic two years ago for a little over £11 million and has helped the player develop into one of world football’s hardest men.
His possible move to City would come as a huge slap in the face to Liverpool whose manager believed they had won the battle for the player’s signature and were close to offering the defender the contract papers to sign.
Chelsea’s boss Antonio Conte also saw Van Dijk as the best option to replace outgoing Blues captain, John Terry, they will both turn their attention to their other defensive targets now.
