Manchester United and Tottenham are said to be circling around Napoli hotshot Dries Mertens. The Belgian has been in fine form throughout this season and has scored 28 goals in just 40 games so far. He is currently negotiating a new deal with the Naples club.
Jose Mourinho may lose Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer. The Swede signed a one year deal last summer, although he has the option of an extra year, he is yet to activate it, and has been linked with a big money move to the MLS next season.
Mourinho believes Mertens is the ideal replacement for Zlatan who is also top scoring for Manchester United this season.
Tottenham are in need of an experienced striker as they hope to avoid crashing out of the Champions League in the group stage like they did last season. Pochettino believes Mertens’ goal scoring experience in Europe is needed to boost the confidence of his young strikers. He is also tempted to sell Vincent Jansen this summer, and Mertens can come in as the Dutchman’s replacement.
Italian sources are however claiming that Napoli are desperate to keep Mertens, and they ready to match any salary offered from the Premier League duo. Mertens is also happy in Naples.
