Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Nemanja Matic after Roman Abramovic decided to grant the player’s wish.
The Serbian has been a target for former manager Jose Mourinho all through the summer, as the Portuguese manager continues to bolster his team ahead of the new league season.
Jose’s first choice defensive midfielder remains Tottenham’s Eric Dier, but a deal appears to be dead on arrival after Daniel Levy told Old Trafford chiefs that the England man was not for sale. Manchester United went ahead to annoy the Spurs board more by making bids of £30 and £40 million for his signature.
Dier lost his preferred defensive midfield position to Victor Wanyama last season and had to play most games in the central defence position, and although he did impress in that position, he is said to be unhappy at not being trusted to play in his preferred position. Mourinho has promised to play him there, and the Red Devils are also willing to double his current wage which currently stands around £65,000 per week.
The Red Devils are now prepared to offer up to £50 million for Matic as Abramovic wants a Lukaku tax on any fee being offered after the Red Devils outwitted them to the signing of Romelu Lukaku.
