Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has opened up about his contract situation, though it really did not reveal much more than what he has said before.
Ozil is set to enter the final year of his contract with the Gunners, a situation that seems to occur on a regular basis with the top Arsenal players.
The Germany international has held off with talks for some time now, much to the frustration of the club and his reasoning does seem somewhat flimsy.
Speaking to SFR Sport Ozil said:
“As I said in the past, what is important is the team, not my personal case or that of another player.
“We focus on Arsenal, we have big games to play if we want to qualify for the Champions League, and that’s what we need to focus on. My future, we’ll talk about it at the end of the season.
“My priority today is to finish the season as best as possible with Arsenal.”
That does seem a little disingenuous, many top players sign contract extensions midway through the season, it is rather clear that Ozil is waiting to see if Arsenal qualify for the Champions League and he is taking the Arsenal faithful for fools if he believes they will fall for his excuses.
Arsenal already pays him an extreme amount of money, it is unlikely another club will match that, his performances over the last couple of seasons have devalued his worth, which undermines even further his stated reasons for not sitting down to discuss his contract renewal.
The writing is on the wall, if Arsenal makes the Champions League he will probably stay, if they do not, he will go.
