The Chronicle is reporting that Newcastle have edged ahead of Man City in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.
The midfielder has a deal with Sporting until the summer of 2020, but the club may be forced to sell him due to their financial difficulties.
Carvalho has been on the radar of top English teams including Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool for some summers now, but it is believed that Newcastle United have edged ahead of all of them with a £25 Million offer for the Player.
Newcastle are planning for life in the Premier League, they are just a few wins away from automatic promotion to the Premier League, and they are beginning to identify players that will help them consolidate their promotion with a great campaign in the top flight next season.
Pep Guardiola wanted Carvalho to replace the outgoing Yaya Toure, but he seems to have prioritised the signing of Franck Kessie from Atlanta and Marco Verratti from PSG over the Portuguese play maker. This has given Newcastle the opportunity to sign the player.
It is unclear if the player would be willing to swap Lisbon for a team just gaining promotion to the English top flight.
