Liverpool, boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed talks about Steven Gerrard returning to the club.
Gerrard will make his final appearance at Anfield against Crystal Palace today (5.30pm) – and the penultimate match of his Liverpool career – before moving to LA Galaxy in the summer.
“It’s certainly something I have addressed with him a number of times,” said Rodgers on the Sky Sports website.
“Steven is leaving here as a player but it’s certainly not permanent.
“I’ve brought former players back to the club to work in different capacities.
“With Steven, he’s one that when his time is over here as a player, he would be someone I’d love to have working with me if it’s coaching he wants to go down.
“Once he finishes as player, it’s different ball game in coaching and management. Different to what been used to past 20 years.
“That opportunity for him to come back will always be there as long as I’m here.
“If it’s coaching that he wants to go down when he finishes in America, that’s something we will discuss in more detail.”
