Chelsea’s wait to sign a replacement for unwanted top scorer Diego Costa is finally over as the Blues get set to announce the signing of Alvaro Morata.
The Spaniard has been on the radar of several top teams this summer after failing to displace Karim Benzema from the Real Madrid line up last season.
Morata has always been the first choice of Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte as the Italian enjoyed their time together when he signed the attacker for Juventus. However, the Blues board convinced him that Lukaku’s Premier League experience gave him more advantage than Morata who is unproven. After they lost out in the signing Lukaku, Conte told the Blues to get him Morata at all cost.
He got his wish. The Spaniard scored 20 goals in all competitions last season despite playing second fiddle to Karim Benzema.
The Blues are set to sign him for a fee that could rise to £78 million, An amount that Manchester United baulked at when quoted, and instead, they went on to sign Lukaku who almost won the Premier League’s Golden Boot last season.
Conte would be hoping Morata can fire them to defend their Premier League crown as well as Champions League glory.
This signing means that Costa can finally depart Stamford Bridge, a move that is in the best interests of all parties.
