Following relegation to the Championship at the end of last season, Newcastle United have been conducting plenty of business during the summer transfer window. The Magpies are aiming for instant promotion back to the Premier League, but required reinforcements after losing their first two league matches of the new season. Manager Rafa Benitez made bolstering the defence a priority, and the club have now confirmed the £5 million signing of right-back DeAndre Yedlin from Tottenham Hotspur.
The United States international defender joined Spurs from MLS side Seattle Sounders two years ago following an impressive World Cup run. Despite extensive experience on the international stage, the 23-year-old spent the majority of his first season at White Hart Lane in the Under-21 team, before making his debut at the end of the campaign. His single appearance for the Lilywhites proved to be his last, with the club deciding to send Yedlin on a season-long loan to Sunderland, helping the Black Cats to avoid a similar fate to their Tyne and Wear rivals.
The American was deemed surplus to requirements by Mauricio Pochettino, with interest from several Premier League and Championship sides. Newcastle have managed to emerge winners in the transfer race though, agreeing a five-year contract with Yedlin, who has been brought in to replace Watford-bound Daryl Janmaat.
