New Everton manager Sam Allardyce is not sure if Ross Barkley has already agreed on a transfer away from Goodison Park, with Tottenham and Chelsea the clear favourites to have succeeded in signing the England international.
Barkley’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has freely admitted that he would not be surprised if a deal has already been done, he simply does not know.
‘I’d like to think we can keep Barkley, unless somebody’s already done a deal for him,’ Allardyce said.
‘I am not daft enough to know in this game that those words and phone calls might not have already gone on. ‘If we could get Ross Barkley to stay then nobody would be more delighted than me. ‘Whether that is a possibility I do not know. ‘For me it’s about getting him back in the squad first and seeing where we are from there.’
Quite revealing comments if truth be told, you would think that Allardyce would know and for him to have made comments like these it probably means that he has been informed that the 23-year-old forward will be leaving Everton this January.
Barkley came very close to signing for Chelsea last summer only to pull out at the last minuted, he claimed that he wanted time to make his mind up, which may well mean that it is Tottenham and not Chelsea that he wants to join.
The player is currently recovering from a hamstring injury and has not featured for the Toffees this season and it is possible that we will never see him in an Everton shirt again.
