Belgian sources are claiming that Tottenham are close to sealing a deal for Napoli attacker, Dries Mertens. Mertens has been in hot form this season, he has starred in the false nine role for the club, and many European teams want to sign the attacker this summer.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with the Belgian with reports last week claiming that the Red Devils have prepared a deal that would almost double whatever wage Napoli are currently offering him.

But it seems Tottenham have stolen a march on the Red Devils. Tottenham have almost confirmed their qualification for next season’s Champions League. While United are still struggling to qualify and it is believed that Mertens will not play for a team that is not in the Champion’s league.

Napoli are currently negotiating a new contract in the region of £2.5 Million per season for the player, which is unlikely to be enough.

Mertens’ wife recently left their house in Naples to move to London, this may also play a part in where he chooses to play his club football next season.
