The agent of France international Anthony Martial, 22, has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons this morning, claiming that his client wants to leave Manchester United this summer. However, the bookies remain unconvinced.
Martial is even money to still be at United when the transfer window closes. Chelsea is his next most likely destination at 6/4, though that price is out on its own with most bookies having the Blues around the 9/2 mark. Tottenham is in the mix with odds between 5/2 and 3/1, while amongst European clubs Juventus are favourites with odds of between 4/1 and 6/1.
One club that is seen to have very little chance of landing Martial, despite claims in some quarters that they are in the hunt, is Arsenal. They are as high as 33/1, which tells you all you need to know, especially when you consider that one bookie has Everton at 25/1.
Now odds can change easily. and quite dramatically, so those quoted above are early prices, and some bookies have clearly not taken on board the comments of Martial’s agent Philippe Lamboley:
“After thinking about all the factors and possibilities, Anthony wants to leave Manchester United,” Lamboley said. “There are lots of factors, and right now it’s too early to talk about them.
“I think that when United, the most powerful club in the world, do not find an agreement after eight months of negotiations then they do not really want to keep such an important player in their squad. That’s why this decision has come – it’s a well-thought-out decision. Everyone will have their opinion but I think he needs to resume his career. The time has come.”
Lamboley’s comments are unambiguous, suggesting that this is not a ploy to improve his client’s contract, while the fact that Martial has been omitted from France’s World Cup squad must also have a bearing on the youngster’s current thinking.
With the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, it is hard to see where Martial fits into Mourinho’s immediate plans. Could this be yet another talent, like Salah and De Bruyne, that Mourinho lets slip through the net?
Martial is likely to leave and if I were to place a bet on his next destination it would most likely be on Chelsea, though I would not rule out Juventus.
It is going to be an interesting transfer window, that is for sure.
