Ajax boss Frank De Boer has come out and confirmed he wanted to sign up Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud when he played for Montpellier.
The Dutch club have a well-earned reputation for helping develop some of the world’s best talent including the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Luis Suarez, but De Boer has bemoaned the fact that Ajax struggle to compete in the transfer market for players that are just starting off in the game.
As quoted on the Daily Express, De Boer said: “We’re still looking for these boys. But you also have to have a bit of luck.
“(Board member) Tonny Bruins pointed us towards Olivier Giroud when he played for Montpellier. He had also been quick to notice Xherdan Shaqiri.
“But if those guys happen to score often for a few weeks, then you get Arsenal and Bayern Munich at the doorstep. Then you have no chance.”
