England player ratings – Semi final now awaits England’s victorious lions

England are now in the World Cup semi-final following an impressive 2-0 win over Sweden.

The whole England team played well. They were assured, comfortable, calm and intelligent and that is reflected in the two-goal winning margin. However, to win the game the players had to perform to a high-level, with some having a better game than others.

Here are the ratings for the victorious England team.

Jordan Pickford 9/10

Had a brilliant game. Pulled off a couple of great saves and showed immense confidence throughout, especially with his distribution.

Kieran Trippier 8/10

Another fine performance from the Tottenham defender. He showed no sign of nerves, his passing and crossing were consistently accurate and he ran all day long.

Kyle Walker 8/10

Getting better by the game. Playing in a different position to the one he plays at club level, he has taken time to bed in, but he has done that now and it was reflected in his performance against the Swedes.

John Stones 8/10

Another good game for the Manchester City man, he is becoming a giant in the centre of defence. He made no mistakes and his runs and passes out of defence were all calm and assured.

Harry Maguire 9/10

A fantastic performance and a brilliantly taken goal that calmed the nerves of the whole team. He was solid in defence and as cool as a cucumber on the ball.

Ashley Young 7/10

Was a pest to the Swedes all game long. He put in a beautiful corner that led to Maguire’s opening goal and overall had an effective game.

Jordan Henderson 8/10

Close to receiving 9/10,  he had an outstanding game. He holds that central midfield area together beautifully, was a great foil for the defence and some of his passing was sublime.

Dele Alli 8/10

Great second goal for England that effectively killed the game off. He is still not at his best but the signs are promising. His vision and understanding of where to position himself led directly to that second goal and the great thing about the young Tottenham forward is that have still not seen the best of him.

Jesse Lingard 8/10

A busy bee throughout the game, he provided the assist for Alli’s goal and was dangerous throughout with his forward runs.

Raheem Sterling 8/10

Sterling has been unfairly maligned in some quarters for his inability to score but that should not detract from his overall performance against Sweden. He scared the life out of the Swedish defence, had them in knots on multiple occasions, drew defenders away from his teammates and came so very close to scoring and lifting the monkey off his back. Overall Sterling put in a great performance.

Harry Kane 7/10

Not his best game but his mere presence caused the Swedes no end of problems. So worried were they at corners, they detailed three defenders to mark him, which gave Maguire the space to score. He held the ball up well and was comfortable playing a deeper role when required, thus freeing up the likes of Sterling, Alli and Lingard.
